Day 100 / An Evening with Work Friends

Donovon and I spent the evening with my work friends from Dallas who I typically only see at these annual conferences.

One of my friends reserved a sunset cruise off Johns Passe this evening. It was a fun little cruise. We got to see some dolphins and snap pics of the setting sun on the Gulf of Mexico. The scene was gorgeous.

After the cruise we all had dinner at a local hole-in-the-wall where the food was amazing and the company so enjoyable.

After dinner, we all met back at the hotel bar for some after dinner drinks and to watch Monday Night Football. My beloved Cowboys are playing and my girls from Dallas and I cheered them on. We’ve had a really fun night, and I’m thankful for spending time with my work friends.

Day 78 / Eminem @ ACL

It was in the year 2000 when I first heard Eminem.  We were living in Dallas at the time.  As I was driving into work one morning, I flipped through radio stations and stopped when I heard “The Real Slim Shady”.  I was cracking up at the lyrics and thought to myself, This guy’s hysterical.  Who the hell is he??  And thus began my infatuation/obsession with Slim Shady/Marshall Mathers/Eminem.

Yes, some of his lyrics, especially in earlier tracks, are disturbing, offensive, and unsettling; but I think that like any artist, he’s expressing himself.  I find him brilliant, ridiculously funny, and remarkably intense.  It’s quite a ride listening to his music, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.  So, when I first learned he was going to perform at ACL this year, I almost jumped out of my skin.

Last night, my friend Rose, her daughter Katy, Alexa, and I finally got to see Eminem live.  As ACL is an outdoor completely open venue, we were on a mission to get as close to the front of the stage as possible.  In an effort to do so, we stood amongst a sea of people for 3 hours, and then nearly suffocated as the crowd pushed, shoved, and squeezed its way toward the front at the end of the set before his.  I thought I was going to pass out at one point, but my resolve kicked in and the crowd settled down and we made it pretty damn close – just five people back from front stage.

I can’t even begin to describe my hysteria throughout his entire set.  I was entranced.  He put on a very entertaining show mixing both old and new songs.  It was so much fun and the best part was being there with Rose, Katy, and Alexa.  Today, my feet hurt and my voice is completely gone, but it was all so incredibly worth it, and I’m so very grateful for the whole experience.

Day 69 / Photos

Donovon found some old digital photos that I thought might be lost forever. I’m not only thankful that he found them, but I’m grateful for photos in general. They capture memories of days long gone – of us and our children as we’ve grown, of family members and friends both still with us and passed on, of celebrations, of holidays. Photos make up the picture book of our life.

As I looked through all the photos that I was so glad were found, I couldn’t help but smile and laugh at all the memories. It made my night.

Day 68 / Lunch with Lori

I caught up with one of My Girls, Lori, during lunch today.  It’s been months since we’ve been able to catch up and I’m so glad we finally got a chance to do so today.

We both had a lot on our minds and it was so nice to just verbalize our thoughts and share some insights and feedback.  I sometimes can’t believe how long we’ve been friends.  I think it’s been close to 10 years now.  We have a lot in common and we’re both Filipino with strong family bonds.  I’m so grateful Lori’s in my life and that we were finally able to have lunch today.

Day 58 / Tracy & Nicole

That saying that it’s about quality not quantity certainly rings true with My Girls. We don’t get to see each other often, but when we do, we pick up right where we left off with the ease of wearing a favorite pair of jeans.

Tonight, I had drinks and dinner with My Girls, Tracy and Nicole. We’ve been friends for well over 15 years. We’ve been there for weddings, pregnancies, births, death, and divorce. I love My Girls. They are a part of my womanhood, my joy, and my soul.

I cherish our connection – the friendship, the good times, the laughter, and of course, the cocktails. 🙂 These ladies give me strength and comfort in knowing that we’re always there for each other, especially when we need each most. It’s always a great to spend time with them. I’m grateful for every moment.

Tracy and Nicole, I’m so thankful you’re in my life and I love you both so much.

Day 54 / The SLCS Girls

The SLCS Girls are girls – now women – that I went to Catholic school with. St. Louis Catholic School (SLCS), that is.

Now, most of us have not been in contact for over 20 years. But we reconnected through Facebook about 5 years ago and we’ve stayed in contact ever since, getting together three or four times a year at least.

The thing is, even though most of us went our separate ways after 8th grade, our connection runs deep. We grew up together. We knew each others’ parents and siblings. We came of age together.  Therefore, when we get together now, as we learn more about each other as adults, our connection has strengthened.

It’s a bond that is difficult to explain.  It’s truly unique in that I have no other friendships that match it.  Tonight, we got together for a belated birthday celebration for me.  Throughout the night, I kept thinking how fortunate I am to have reconnected with this group of women, not just the ones there tonight, but all the girls I went to Catholic school with.

I cherish these friendships and am truly grateful for The SLCS Girls.

Day 27 / Rosebud

Rosebud is my nickname for my friend Rose. We’ve been friends for about 20 years and have only lived in the same city for 2 years of those 20. She lives in Dallas and if we’re lucky we get to see each other a couple times a year.

Somehow our friendship stands the test of time and distance. I attribute it to a connection based on love, laughter, lots of good times. Just about every memory of the times we’ve spent together causes me to crack up over some crazy mishap or silly antic.

I admire Rose’s sincerity, her authenticity, and her love of life. She always brings me joy, and I’m so grateful for our friendship and that she’s here this weekend sharing more good times with me.

I love you, Rosebud. Thank you for being my friend.

Day 12 / Hanging with Friends at the Bar

Ava stayed with her Nana tonight so we took advantage of the “kidless” evening to meet up with friends at our neighborhood bar.  I’ve been kinda down this week missing my dad and work has been a little intense, so spending time with friends at the bar was a much needed and welcomed break.

It was so nice just hanging out, enjoying our friends’ company, and drinking and eating.  I love my baby girl, but I’m grateful for the occasional “grown-up” time with friends…and good martinis.
