Day 193 / Helping My Big Girl

Alexa is applying for a transfer to UT Austin to begin attending in the fall. It is very difficult to get in so she’s nervous about it, and she’s asked me for help. I’m grateful that she can still come to me for help and that I am able to help her. I proof-read her essays and her resume and helped with formatting.

There is a very fine line between being helpful and taking control; one that is a challenge for me. Part of me wants to help her and part of me wants to do the entire application for her. Obviously the latter is of no help to her in the long run. She needs to gain entrance on her own merit.

So other than suggesting a couple of changes in sentence structure, I did not interfere with her writing. She’s come along way in her writing and I’m very proud of her. And I’m so proud of all that’s she’s accomplished so far. I have no doubt that she’ll be accepted. And I’m thankful that I could help her in some small way.

Day 192 / At-Home Dinner and a Movie

I’ve mentioned more than once my love of movies. We watch a movie with dinner at home at least 4 or 5 times a week, if not more. We have a collection of over 1200 DVDs and Blu-Rays. So needless to say, we haven’t run out of movies to watch.

The routine is Ava goes to bed around 8pm after which Donovon and I put on a movie and eat our dinner. Sometimes Alexa will join us and sometimes we’ll have our neighbor over. Sometimes we’ll marathon watch a series like Die Hard the first night, Die Hard 2 the second, etc. Sometimes we’ll choose an actor and watch a series of his or her movies each night.

We’ve been doing this for years and I just realized how grateful I am to have these At-Home Dinner & Movie Nights. They’re such an enjoyable and relaxing way to end the day.

Day 189 / Fun-filled Saturday

This Saturday made up for last Saturday in spades.

It began with a relaxing morning watching Grease with My Girls. We then met Donovon’s aunt and cousins for some family fun at Pinballz. We followed that with a late lunch at Trudy’s. The day ended with the birthday party of a childhood friend of mine with My Big Girl as my party date.

All day long, I felt surrounded by so much love and joy. I’m so grateful for a fun-filled Saturday with family and friends.

Day 186 / Catching Up with My Toot

When I don’t connect with My Toot for a while, I feel disconnected in a way. We’re both very busy with our families and our careers, so sometimes weeks will go by before we talk. And it’s a little unsettling…for both of us.

I really can’t remember the last time we spoke, it had been that long. So catching up with My Toot today made me feel so much better. I think I’ve shared in recent posts that I’ve been a little stressed lately. Talking to Crestina today was so comforting. I think our connection has always grounded us. Sometimes I forget how significant it is. I’m grateful that we caught up and most grateful for our connection.

I love you, Toot.

Day 185 / Ava’s singing

I had one of those days at work where things just kept going from bad to worse. I seriously could not catch a break. Therefore, my mood only went from bad to worse.

I make every effort not to not bring work home with me. That includes my mood, but it was tough to shake off today.

Queue Ava’s singing. My Little Princess hardly has the voice of a Disney Princess. But she thinks she does. 🙂

I was driving her to gymnastics this evening when the song Take Me to Church by Hozier came on the radio. I wish I could have recorded Ava singing this song. She sang it with such heart and emotion even though she got 90% of the lyrics wrong. It was so dang cute. It made all the stress of the day melt away. I couldn’t help but giggle to myself and tell her how much I love her singing. Especially today, I’m so grateful for it.
